River Valley football wins big in opening game

MOHAVE VALLEY — The River Valley High School football team came out ready to go on Friday afternoon, defeating Yuma High School 41-14 for the second straight year to start the season.

"It's the best way to start, 1-0," head coach Adam King said. "We came out and played really well in the first quarter. We have a lot to work on, but we really appreciate how they came together this summer."

Kaleb Kneuven did it all on the first drive, catching a long pass and then scoring a two-yard rushing touchdown. River Valley extended their lead to 14-0 after a muffed punt before Jayden Plotkin scored his first of two touchdowns in the game.

Mickey Smith threw touchdown passes to Peyton Boice and Hunter Koehler to close out the first half. The Dust Devils also added a safety to lead 28-6 at halftime.

Smith continued to shine, throwing his third touchdown pass of the day to Shane Steinbeck before Plotkin scored on a 59-yard run. He finished with 179 yards on 20 carries, and Smith threw for 100 yards.

"I had a great first game," Smith said. "Offense came out strong. We put up a good number today. A couple of things to work on going into week two, but to start off the year, we looked good.”

Defensively, Boice led the team with 10 tackles. Wyatt Maxwell added nine, with Deacon Maish and Jaycen Larance each having eight.
