MOHAVE VALLEY — River Valley High School was in a battle on Friday night, needing overtime to beat Wickenburg High School to move to 5-0.
"A tough football game tonight," head coach Adam King said. "That's what 3A West football is about. We have a ton of respect for Wickenburg, their players, and their coaches. We made it unnecessarily hard on ourselves in the first half, but our defense rose to the occasion time and time."
The Dust Devils trailed by two at halftime after allowing a score and a two-point confession before Mickey Smith connected with Peyton Boice for a touchdown.
River Valley tied the game up with a safety and nearly scored as time expired, but shined in overtime. After a Jayden Plotkin touchdown was called back, the Dust Devils had to go 20 yards to take their first lead of the game on a Plotkin run. The Wranglers then had their shot from the 10-yard line but was stopped on fourth down on a tackle by Jaycen Larance.
"Wickenburg came out to play," Larance said. "Offense was struggling, but the defense came out on top. We hit the hole and the gap and just did it right today."
Aden Montgomery continued his incredible season with an interception while Kaleb Knueven shined on offense, defense and special teams.
